Lily sat on a window ledge on the fourth floor with her back to the cold stone and the sun shining through the window next to her. On her lap, a text book for potions lay open and a text book for herbology sat on the ground below her, when she needed it, she levitated it with her wand and then let it set back down. On top of the book on her lap, her notebook lay open as she scribbled essays on the topical use of plants and their counter uses in potions. The best way to learn was to write, she always thought, so she wrote a lot. She had stacks and stacks of essays that we wrote purely for study purposes, under the bed in her dorm room. She’d get rid of them someday, but not until she graduated at least. She never knew when one might come in handy again.

| ◀ | When do things stop feeling magical? ❤ It didn't matter how many days could pass by around here. Each day was different in some way, even if her schedule was pretty similar.
The kind of studying it took to try and be someone exceptional, wasn't anything that was just a few hours. She had to be familiar with these things.
There was a line somewhere around there, where she couldn't look at another page without feeling exhausted, but that was what other things were for.
If she couldn't do assignments, then there was something else she could have busied herself with.
The structure of their curriculum didn't change much, but even the writing involved with the studying of ancient runes, was to be taken more seriously beyond learning its alphabets.
It was like learning another language, and who could really pass up that kind of opportunity?
"Marshmallow, gingerbread sesame, snaps gingerbread, chocolate bar."
A whisper under her lips as she left behind this floor's study room, reciting what was essentially random words, though the pictures and symbols associated with it in the rune alphabet, she could see pretty clearly in her head.
The air always felt so much cooler after being around others for so long. She had yet to really feel the need to swamp someone older than her with questions of what she couldn't easily grasp, but the thought was around.
There was always someone better that knew more, or could see it in a way she currently couldn't.
It still felt nice if she go to prattle with someone later though. Who with, there were no faces she had in mind, and doing so with her study group was different from what she saw as casual.
But something would interest her beyond the faces she passed by. What did it matter to her, seeing a couple of people here and there quickly snog?
She didn't know most people well enough to tell if it was even with the right person. What came to mind more was the kind of authority that usually roamed corridors like these.
"Wynn, nied, rad, gear, daeg."
What could have been.
Four years of work preparing for the day and year that she could have experienced being a Prefect, but neither the Headmaster, nor any other faculty had asked her to become one, like she heard was meant to happen upon her fifth year.
Failing that practically made it too late for what years they had left, yet she found herself still smiling through it all. Shifting the idea of what couldn't be, to what else she could still do.
There were others who would have taken not being given a position worse. Hogwarts: A History, had those kind of lessons. Possibly even start an actual war over something so simple.
It brought a light smile, but nothing in comparison to seeing a certain figure.
Calling it reaching the point of wanting to pester, though for a different reason if it had been someone else, she plopped down near to where the girl had decided was the best place to do work.
"It gets really tiring you lot keep on underestimating some of us."
The difference between one year and the next could be steep for sure with the material, but a slight grasp was still something, wasn't it?
The witch she knew to be both a Prefect, and apart of her house, had enough of a reputation, with or without that family name of hers.
It was her own 5th year here, and someone like that, she made sure to have talked to at least twice a month. Didn't matter to her how responsive whoever she talked to really was.
She could have gotten stung by a hex even, but all it would show for someone with this position was abuse, and the kind of standard she would have thought would be different.
Her finger circled around the floor. She was all ready to chatter away, while the girl sat like that on the ledge. And it was only going to be more effort for one of them to get up.

A younger girl that Lily knew from being in her house plopped down nearby but Lily paid her little mind. There wasn’t really any reason to look up. They weren’t exactly friends and Lily didn’t have much to say at the moment. But she glanced up when she saw the figure turn the corner and then went back to scribbling her essay down when she noticed who it was. But then the girl spoke and Lily’s lips curled up into a little smirk, "It gets really tiring you lot keep on underestimating some of us." what? “Uh, excuse me?” Lily asked, still not looking up from the parchment, not even as she dipped her quill into the ink and then continued writing the outline she had in her head. Free writing essays were one of the best ways to learn and always had been for the Snape girl, it wasn’t something she was going to stop now. Lily couldn’t even remember the last time she had talked to this girl, she knew her name, mostly due to the nature of her calling as a prefect, but, she wouldn’t really say that she knew her. Maybe something happened and the girl had a bad encounter with another student and now just needed to rant, which, while annoying, was part of Lily’s job to listen to, she supposed.

| ◀ | When do things stop feeling magical? ❤ The first few words always made things easier, even if they still weren't looking eye to eye.
"Four years here at the school, and I'm pretty certain I've still been able to teach the other years something. Maybe not the actual spells they can't learn until then, but it's the concept and theories that matter."
Resting the hand she was tracing with against the floor, while the other stayed in her lap, there were a lot of ways she could have started this off. An assumption being the first that came to mind.
Something like, are you actually going to say something I could use this time around?
But that was with the assumption that she was more than just a face. Which was unlikely, since they couldn't really greet each other on even a last name basis.
Snape. Knight.
That would have shook away a lot more of what was on her mind. Not that what was going on now, wasn't helping. The lack of eye contact wasn't something she was really bothered by, being told she did that to people herself.
But it was hard to say it didn't matter more, coming from someone with the authority to take house points. Another unlikely thing since they were both Ravenclaws.
"I've still been talked to like I'm not capable, even if we'll be learning the same things, given another year. Frankly, it's surprising so many of you care that we want to read some of these future assignments."
This wasn't just all about the assignments, a lot of those she's asked kept pressing would be too difficult. Redactions were a thing, and the idea of not being able to read until she was old enough was just a silly thing to prevent.
It was looking between the other girl and her work, was she again reminded of the position she hadn't been able to grasp.
Just hearing herself aloud explaining some of what went on in her study groups. That was the kind of model thing expected from a Prefect, wasn't it?
She didn't really get together like this for her own benefit either. Opportunities never really impacted just her.

The younger student was distraught over, Lily couldn’t exactly determine what: not being the same age as older people, she supposed. Someone had told her she couldn’t keep up with NEWT work, and it was a huge change, but Lily just shrugged and tossed her Herbology book down, it landed with. Thud next to the girl on the stone floor. “Go for it.” Lily said. What did she care if Knight wanted to read a NEWT level textbook. She wasn’t sure it would be very interesting, but Lily thought it was, she loved Herbology though, unlike a majority of other students. “Don’t let someone tell you what you can’t do.” She didn’t mean for it to sound inspirational. She meant for it to sound tough. Lily never listened to anyone, including her parents. How she was made prefect, she had no idea, she wasn’t one for rules and believed they were meant to be broken. Everyone had their own path. And if this girl wanted hers to include reading NEWT level books, so be it.

| ◀ | When do things stop feeling magical? ❤ None of her words really had any single person in mind. Just faces in general, rattling off what they couldn't really prove, and her own distaste hearing what was supposedly factual.
They were all capable of excelling in their courses, but not all of them were willing.
Her own initiative being halted, despite the actual resources being present, was a witness of being denied the chance of proving herself.
It just lacked a lot of sense having someone some years above her, believe they could set the pace of her own learning, when her pastime was hardly their concern.
"This is certainly one of the things that makes their insistence daft. Most people wouldn't even take Herbology if it wasn't mandatory."
Care of Magical Creatures she always thought others saw as more popular, since they wouldn't be primarily in a greenhouse, where it was more likely to be humid, in a room full of bodies.
There were a couple of people she knew within her year, who still couldn't separate the idea that Flitterblooms weren't Devil's Snares, even if they did both look enough alike.
"Well that's one way to look at things."
The responsibilities of a Prefect contradicted what she was hearing, but she understood well enough what the girl was trying to get at.
Things like that were just easier said than done. Rules were around for a reason, and only certain things could really be excused under the guise of adventure.
"If you're so certain about it, then is there anything Prefect related I could assist with?"
Being selected as one in the first place, meant that you were exemplary in a way that their Head of House and the Headmaster, really knew of, without outright asking.
So it wasn't like any of the girl's responsibilities, even something like scheduling or moving supplies, there was any need of help.
But when it came down to hearing herself and others talk, these words that could simply be forgotten about the next day, stuck out more in her own mind.
Being told no on some kind of regard, was just the kind of thing she needed to feel. To hold onto.
"And if not that, I suppose you could compare it to being a lackey in some kind of way."

The girl made a comment about most people not taking herbology if it wasn’t mandatory. “It isn’t anymore after the OWLs.” Lily commented. There weren’t many people who decided to continue with it. “But it’s of the most practical subjects, especially for my career path.” She shrugged, still not looking up from her essay, though she had to admit, she liked this girls spirit. There was something about her that Lily found...endearing, maybe? She didn’t mind the company, oddly enough. The conversation wasn’t nearly as annoying as she had assumed it would be from the girls first words.
Though Lily’s eyebrow didn’t raise a little when she asked if there was anything prefect related that she needed help with. Lily wasn’t entirely sure what she was getting at, but she shook her head, “Nope. Don’t think so...” she admitted. There wasn’t too much she had to do as a prefect anyway. It wasn’t more important than her schoolwork, mostly, she just roamed the corridors of the castle for a few hours after curfew a few times a week with another prefect in case anyone was out of their common room. Lily knew the assumption that was made about prefects, but they weren’t true. Prefects weren’t the best, goodie-two-shoes type of students who would bend to the professors every rule. Prefects were chosen based on their progress, personalities, and status. Lily certainly wasn’t perfect, and she had landed herself in detention more times than she could count over the years. And the headmaster had known than when he sent her the owl and the badge over the summer before her 5th year. “Why would you want to be a lacky?” she asked. Not that it wasn’t tempting. It was deliciously so. But it wasn’t realistic.

| ◀ | When do things stop feeling magical? ❤ Maybe that was another reason she hadn't been seen as someone worthy enough to be a Prefect.
There were two more years left for her here, but she had yet to really settle on what she wanted to do when her seventh year came and gone.
"So you can say with certainty you want to be an herbologist then?"
Apparition Examiner, Arithmancer, Aurologist, or even Curse-Breaker. They were all options she felt could match with her own pace, without it being simple enough to be seen as an average job.
None of them she was overly familiar enough though, to really make an absolute decision.
Actually taking the other girl's earlier words for more than it was, even a Prefect who ironically viewed rules differently, was able to figure out where she wanted to go with her life.
The answer that came from her question was an expected one, but nonetheless still stung like she had been hoping for, being told something was out of her reach.
And while another question was asked of her phrasing, it was bordering what she wasn't interested in having familiarity of.
Begging for something was out of the question. She was already stuck wondering what qualities she lacked to have a position out of her reach.
"Labels won't mean anything down the line. They're not careers."
Some would argue that there were positions that felt demeaning enough to fit the bill, but it still wasn't an actual job title.
"Are you insinuating that you're not some model example to be around?"
While she specifically didn't use the word 'Prefect', it was still obvious enough she was lumping the other girl together with everyone else of that position. Which spared herself the look of some kind of groveling dependency.

Lily shook her head, finally setting down her quill, satisfied enough with where the essay was at to turn her attention away and put a little more to the weird conversation that was being thrust upon her. “No, I’m going into potions.” Lily said. “Herbology is required knowledge. Just like it is for the healer career and several others…” she felt like this sort of thing wasn’t something she needed to explain to a girl in her 5th year, she surely should have sat down with the head of house by now to go discuss career options and required OWL scores and courses to get there. It certainly didn’t surprise anyone that Lily was a wiz at potions. She could probably brew something up blindfolded. She had been exposed to it her entire life.
Lily raised her eyebrow at the younger girls comment about labels. “Okay? I never said they did…” why this girl was trying to put words in her mouth, Lily had no idea. There was obviously something underlying this conversation that was odd and a little obnoxious. There was some tension that Lily certainly hadn’t put there. All the 6th year girl had been doing was writing in a windowsill. “I guess it depends on the behavior you want a model for.” Lily replied with a shrug and a smirk. None of these comments seemed to have anything to do with the previous comment, and Lily looked down at the girl on the floor, her eyebrow quirked. What was going on here?

| ◀ | When do things stop feeling magical? ❤ Funny. She would have thought the assumption the girl wanted a career in potions, would have been inaccurate and too obvious of a guess.
There were a lot of experiences she wanted to have, following after what she knew of her parents, but there were still things that weren't enough of her tastes to avoid warrant doing.
"Well you're lucky you're so certain about following after Potions then."
She wasn't going to bring up how obvious it was, the girl had natural talent from her father, nor just outright say how uncertain she could be regarding her own choice of careers for after graduation.
Not that it didn't seem like it wouldn't have been further explained, anyway. This explanation of what was required knowledge, had been like Herbology dropping its mandatory status down the line.
Something she could have reasoned on her own, or at least found out from someone like Professor Tonks. If she hadn't been so focused on associating the girl with her Prefect status, she would have considered it more as being talked down to about what she knew regarding studies.
They were both Ravenclaws. There were certainly different types, but basics were basics.
The Careers Advice all fifth years had the first week of summer term, could only help someone like her so much. She was simple enough to know she needed at least 'E's'. Which ones really needed 'O's' she could take a guess on.
But it wouldn't take a classroom of Ravenclaws to assume aiming for 7 or 8 'O's' would have put her somewhere safe, while still giving her a fair number of options. It would have been preferable being able to find a reason to cut down her choices.
"I'm fairly open to trying new things out, so whatever's not apparent about you, won't be as surprising as you'd think."
She hadn't really been too surprised already. Though with how the girl hadn't really been paying close attention, nor should have felt a real need to, it likely didn't even count.
The Herbology book she had been handed, what she could grasp of it, did showcase the increasing danger that seemed to come with each course. Being a Curse-Breaker probably needed an 'O' in the subject, knowing that kind of life wasn't a walk of sunshine.
She closed the book apparently much later, than the other girl had decided to stop writing.
"This is like I thought. Nothing of a read that anyone couldn't get used to, so thank you."
The stretch it took to get up and hand back the book was necessary, uncertain about just how the Prefect was feeling to her suggestion.
They might have had different schedules, but they were still apart of the same house, so it wouldn't have been too much work.
All of this stuff she had personally kept silent about, was still getting nowhere to answer she would find acceptable.
It was only clear that she was the odd one out taking things at her own pace.

The Knight girl commented that Lily as lucky for knowing what she wanted to do. Lily shrugged, it wasn’t luck as it was in her blood. It was the same reason she was a prefect even though she didn’t want to be. Her father had just about not given her an option to reject the badge and send it back. It was an honor, a something Lily shouldn’t let go to waste. So she wore the badge everyday that she bothered to wear her robes. “Any idea what you want to go into?” Lily asked, wondering if the girl was fishing for such conversation, maybe she was searching for advice.
She got up to return the book and Lily took it back, setting it on her lap. “Sure, you can read any of my books anytime, just come find me.” she said with a shrug. She didn’t mind at all if the younger year wanted to get ahead a little and get a peak about what she would be learning if she chose to take some of the subjects that Lily was in. She wasn’t sure why anyone would really mind, though she supposed there were some snobby upperclassmen who thought it was below them to allow someone younger to study the same material. Maybe it was the Ravenclaw in her, Lily loved learning, she didn’t really love classes or school, but she loved learning.

| ◀ | When do things stop feeling magical? ❤ There wasn't really any specific answer she was looking for. It was always just how familiar she felt about something, that usually made up her decisions.
If it didn't feel like she really knew enough about something, she couldn't say for absolute certain it was what she had wanted to pursue.
There was already a lot she had come across and experienced yet, with the reasons for it also relying on how much of her own pace she could take with it.
The point of familiarity had usually hit her, once she had exhausted just about every kind of angle it could have been taken. Didn't matter to her how simple or complex of a subject it was, trying to push herself to really know it as well as she could.
"About a handful worth. I guess the most simple one to name would be Curse-Breaker. Defense Against the Dark Arts, Transfiguration, Charms and Ancient Runes, are all fair guesses for the 'O's' I'll need if I really followed up on it. Though I don't see who wouldn't try to aim for all of them."
It was a lot of studying, that even what she had done for it in her fourth year, still wasn't enough.
You really needed to over study for these kind of exams, and the prior years all had a role in it all.
"What do you think I would have gone for?"
The offer to do this kind of borrowed reading again, wasn't anything she was going to turn down.
But it also wasn't like she didn't know any other upperclassmen either. It all just went back to circling around her own preferences with her decisions, and where she felt like taking things.
"Well it's always good to have options. The name's Riley, but I prefer being addressed as my surname of Knight."

Lily nodded as the girl talked about her options and the directions she had been thinking about. She also brought up her classes and what grades she’d get to get on her OWL to be considered ready for NEWT level training in those subjects. Lily nodded, “O’s aren’t too hard to achieve if you try. I'm sure you'll manage them.” she shrugged. Lily had managed an O in every subject that she cared about. Of course that wasn’t every subject. She wasn’t perfect and she didn’t want to be. She didn’t give the same effort to every class. She worked a lot harder in potions than she ever would in charms, or in Transfiguration. Still she managed a high mark in them. It was all about how well you tested and how well you could show off what you knew.
“Yes, I know who you are, Knight.” Lily told her. She wasn't just covering for herself, she did know, Vaguely. At least she remembered her surname. She and the other prefects were charged with knowing every other student in their house, they were responsible for them, after all. It didn’t mean Lily knew or remembered her first name. Riley. That was good to know, she supposed, if the girl came by for another chat sometime again. Why the girl wanted to go by her surname, Lily didn’t know. In England, it was custom to call someone by their surname unless you knew them well enough to use their first name. It was a formality, a sign of respect, but whatever. Lily would oblige. She wouldn’t have to remember her first name, then.
