So I lay my head back down and I lift my hands and pray. To be only yours I pray, to be only yours. I know now you're my only hope. ►
Family Dinner.
A rare event when both your parents were staff of a large school like Hogwarts.
Sometimes Rose was kept away because some dunderhead exploded a cauldron. Sometimes Severus was kept away because some dunderhead exploded a cauldron and he had a mess to clean.
But they made do, this family. Rose would corral them up at least once a week. Somehow, magically, in their quarters. They'd sit and discuss any happenings since the last dinner, and Severus would overlook their homework.
Today, even though it was the end of the first week of school was no exception.
Severus with his finger of whiskey, looking over Lily's recent Charms essay, it was a quiet moment as Rose shuffled about, hair pulled back messily. A sweep past her son had her pausing just briefly, licking her thumb to rub some sort of dirt from his cheek.
Sixteen-year-olds. Somehow in a castle all day, still get dirt everywhere. At least she didn't have to worry about laundry for several months.
Then to her daughter, where she fussed with her hair for a moment and pressing a kiss to her temple before turning her attention back to getting dinner out onto the table.

Lily didn’t have much choice in the matter of a family dinner, but it wasn’t like it was that large of an inconvenience anyway. Sure, she had to come out of her tower and all the way done to the dungeons, but what did it matter? It wasn’t that far. Though telling her friends that she was ditching them for dinner and going with her family instead left a little bruise on her ego. Oh well. What did she care? With her father looking over her charms essay, Lily watched as her mother bounced around the room, wiping dirt off of her twin brother. Lily smirked and teased him with a wiggle of her eyebrows. But then when we mother came over to her and fussed with her hair, Lily sighed. “Mom.” she grumbled before fixing her dyed hair back the way she had it. She liked it a little messy.

[attr="class","junior"] [attr="class","rubedo"] [attr="class","urtv"]✎ 179 WORDS [attr="class","albedo"]JUST LIKE 「MAGIC」 I'LL BE FLYIN' 「FREE」 | [attr="class","gaignun"]Sev hadn’t really anything better to do during dinner anyways so he didn’t mind at all. However, what he did mind was his mother wiping dirt off his face. He grimaced, especially as his sister waggled her eyebrows. He looked as if he was the most unamused person in the entire world during the momming. He was sixteen. She didn’t need to do things like that anymore. He was practically an adult!
Meanwhile, self-proclaimed practical adult smiled and stuck out his tongue teasingly at his sister when their mother went over to give her the same treatment. Serves her right. Sev looked down at his book he was reading and began once more. Sure, this was a family dinner, but he could multitask. It was pretty easy to read, eat and talk if he was talked to, so it wasn’t a big deal. Even if his father usually scolded him for reading at the table.
“What’s wrong, Lily? Forget a hairbrush?” He gave her another small grin before looking back down at his book. |

So I lay my head back down and I lift my hands and pray. To be only yours I pray, to be only yours. I know now you're my only hope. ► She giggled at her daughters whine, "hey now. I don't get to do it often, just put up with it for just a little bit."
Gosh, her kids were growing too fast. Wasn't it just yesterday they were only to her knees? Now they were thinking they were adults! Her heart pained at such a thought.
They were very mature, that was. But for some reason, she could sense trouble on the horizon.
"Now, now, don't let me hear the two of you squabbling."
Or it was just the siblings being siblings.
Rose peeked out of the kitchen waggling her brows with a grin. "Your father's had one of those days and I want him to be able to enjoy this dinner without the drama, okay?"
She eyes the book in her son's lap, shaking her head. Knowing he was going to have to put that away in a minute.
That said, a flick of her wand - which was the only magic she used when it came to dinner - and dinner was on the table and she gave Sev a look of 'put it away or have your father tell you to do it'.
She took her chair on Severus' right at the four-person table and looked to him. "So, what's the verdict? Is she still your daughter?"
She laughs at the joke, looking to her daughter, smiling.

Lily rolled her eyes at her mother's comment, but she had to admit, it was fair. And it wasn’t like her mother acted this way in public. Sometimes she envied the other students. Their parents were at home, where they belonged, working or doing whatever it was that they did. Both of her parents were here, keeping an eye on her and Severus Jr. everyday. It was easy to feel bitter about it all and hate her parents for it. But she didn’t. It wasn’t always her favorite. But she appreciated having another place to go when she didn’t want to go to her common room or dorm. Her parents quarter certainly felt shut off from the rest of the castle. Though she did hate that it had to be underground.
Her brother teased her after her mother played with her hair and she fixed it again. “No, did you?” she asked, teasing in reference to her brothers curls. At least Lily’s hair was straight enough to easily style, she didn’t envy the curls that her mother and brother had in abundance. After the food appeared on the table her mother sat down, joining them and asked their father how the essay was and whether Lily was still his daughter. Lily smirked, “Yeah, am I disowned?” she giggled. She knew she wasn’t. She had managed an 'Exceeds Expectations' on her charms OWL.

You ought to be more careful. People will think you're...
Up to something. He enjoyed these family dinners. He always looked forward to them, spending time with his children despite the reputation he might have in this school. A soft spot, some might say, he had for his family, his daughter, his son, his wife. After all, his son was the only Gryffindor he didn’t seem to hate. Not that he wouldn’t dock him points just because he was his son. Taking a sip of his drink, he read the essay while his wife was busy getting dinner ready and his children were bickering amongst themselves. Severus glanced up as he set the essay down, his eyes bearing into his daughter for a moment. His expression was neutral and so it could go either way. He passed the paper over to Lily and then gave her a small nod. “You’re safe this time.” A smile appeared on his face and he leaned back. With a wave of his wand the book flew from his son’s hand and found its place next to the professor’s plate. He patted it and gave his son a smile. “I found your arguments quite potent, though there were not quite well supported. Flitwick won’t care too much. I’m sure you will earn the highest of marks. However, if it were for my class I would give you an E.”

So I lay my head back down and I lift my hands and pray. To be only yours I pray, to be only yours. I know now you're my only hope. ► Rose snickered. Callous yet loving.
Her husband's speciality.
Of course, they would never disown their children over their grades. Hell, Sev could be a squib for all she cared. But he wasn't. However, being a child of a high-profile teacher did have some downsides, and she worried that her kids weren't... being kids. But noting Lily's rebelliousness lately, she knew she had absolutely nothing to worry about.
The book flew out of Sev's lap, and she stamped down her giggle.
"Luckily for you, your father doesn't teach charms," Rose said with a teasing air, eyeing him.

Lily listened as her father explained his thoughts and then she scoffed a little when she took the essay back and tucked it into her book bag which sat at the base of her chair. “I was trying to keep it concise. I feel like over explaining things that I would consider to be common sense it just a waste of parchment.” she shrugged, though she was sure what her father was saying was true. A lot more was common sense to Lily than it was to the rest of the student population. However, with the knowledge that her essay would pull her a top mark, she didn’t care to revise. She didn’t need to put in more work if she didn’t have to. When her mother said it was lucky that her father didn’t teach charms, Lily giggled and shrugged, “I could live with an E.” she teased, grabbing a piece of bread from the basket.

He looked at his father with a blank expression before, still making eye contact with him, he pulled out another book from his bag and opened it. His eyes only left as he turned his head to begin reading again. He knew this would annoy his father, but he didn’t really care. He was sixteen, he wanted to show his father – and by extension his mother – that he could make his own choices and whatever they did wouldn’t change it.
“There’s a difference between over-explaining and covering all your points, Lily. If you cannot differentiate between what you consider common sense and what is actually common sense, then no one will understand your words.” Sev looked up, his eyes locked onto his sister. “And that, in and of itself, is failure, no matter what grade you get.” Not that he read the essay. He was sure it was fine. But he liked picking on his sister, especially when it came to the essays. His father always gave him the same sort of criticism, but unlike her, he was not going to settle for simply and E. Even in Divination and Arithmancy where he really failed badly on his O.W.L.s he tried his very best.

Rose's eyes fell to her daughter once more as the defended her essay and she smiled behind her napkin as she "proceeded to wipe her mouth". She was so much like her father in that way.
Rose giggled, "waste of parchment. I wonder where such an opinion would come from."
She had been privy to a few of a certain Gryffindor girl's essays and boy were they a read and not in a good way.
It was then her son put in his two cents... and it was like two sides of the same coin. They were opposites, but it was obvious they were siblings.
He did have a point though. But she had a feeling her daughter was going to do things her way.
"Now, now, Sev. No need to be so harsh."
She was sure he'd be gaining his father's talent in tongue, in the future.
Children were such a joy. Different houses, different trains of thoughts and opinions.
She set her chin in her hand, "both of you could give up magic entirely and becomes squibs and your father and I would still love you the same."

Up to something. Severus looked at his son when he gave his… opinion on the matter. The boy didn’t even read the essay – though he had a point, if they had been talking about any other student. Or if he had read the essay. While yes, she could have explained some points better, it wasn’t any big points or a foundation on which she laid her work. It was more like a couple of cracks that did very little other than make it look slightly less appealing than a perfect structure. He rolled his neck and waved his wand once more taking the second book from Sev and gave the boy a glare that said, ‘do it again and you’re grounded’. Sure, he understood multitasking, but right now was the time for family, and Sev, while it was admirable that he enjoyed studying and reading, had just challenged his authority directly. And he wasn’t going to stand for that. They were still children – not yet adults, not yet able to leave home, even if that was coming soon. They needed to learn to respect authority. Especially if it were to transfer into class. He would not tolerate disrespect in class from his own children. His gaze softened as he looked over at Rose when she said something about how they could be squibs and still love them the same. “Did I ever say something differently?” He was a bit worried his strictness had come off as conditional on his love for them. Just because he expected good things from them didn’t mean he didn’t love them – he just set expectations he knew they could reach. He wouldn’t accept them being lazy and wasting their gifts…. though he would still love them. He just wanted the best for them.

If there was anything Lily hated more than being stuck underground for extended periods of time, it was being told to do something. Anything. On her own, she’d gladly do any chore or any piece of revision she felt like she needed to. She was organized in her own way and very self driven, however, the moment her parents, or teachers, told her to do something, more than simply assigning a task, the less she wanted to do it. Which meant that being told to revise her essay cemented the fact that she wouldn’t be doing so. She shrugged at her brothers comment, the words rolled right off of her without so much as a scratch. Lily didn’t really care what he had to say: she was the one in the “smart” house, after all. It wasn’t her fault if she was a level or two above the majority.
Her mother and father exchanged a small back and forth while her dad removed yet another book from her brothers lap. At least she wasn’t being rude at family dinner. She figured she wanted to be here as little as Sev did, and they both had better things they could think about doing, but she wasn’t being so obvious about it. She rolled her eyes at her mother's comment about still loving them if they decided to stop using magic and decided that was all she was going to say about her essay anymore, “Dinner looks great mum.” she changed the subject, reaching out for the salad tongs.

Rose sighed, "no, of course not, darling. I was just translating."
She watched as yet another book was stripped from her son's lap and she gave him a look that said, 'try that again, I dare you'. Her eyes narrowing into a glare much like their fathers.
She didn't use that glare often, as she knew it would have more effect that her husband's. She always said he used his - or rather, he looked put off, way too often. So much so that the children - including her own - had just simply gotten used to it. On her, however, it was rare. And deadly.
It was gone the moment Lily complimented dinner. "Thanks, darling," she replied, turning to her daughter. "Now eat up, we'll need to get you back up before curfew."

There was something different about that look from his mother than his father. It was common to see that look on his father’s face. He was a very serious sort of guy, his father, and his mother was a lot more empathetic. There were a lot of times when he didn’t know if his father was proud or disappointed in him – but with his mother he always knew. That look was terrifying on his mother. It meant she really meant business. He didn’t want to be in that much trouble. He pursed his lips and leaned back up without a third book. He reached over and began to poke at his food for a moment.
“Are we just going to sit here in silence?” He looked up and around the table at his family members. “Bask in just sitting here silently staring at each other, having no idea what to say.” He sighed and stood up from his seat. “I’ll be taking my leave. I’m not really hungry anyways. Rather sit in my dorm than stare at you guys all night.” With that he picked up his book bag, waved his wand, which took the books from his father and had then fly into his bag and walked on out. |

While Lily served herself from the food that she knew her mother had worked hard to prepare, and which she was actually thankful for, even if she was still acting as if it was nothing to her, she listened as her parents attention all turned towards her brother. Lily’s eye looked up just in time to see Sev grab his book bag and stand up, going off on how he didn’t want to be here and he’d rather go sit in his dorm. “Sev…” she sighed, her eyes following him as he walked across the room towards the door of the living quarters. “Come on just come sit down please?” she begged, she didn’t really want any more family drama tonight. She didn’t want to be there either, he had to know that, but if she, a ‘bad girl’ type who didn’t care about getting in trouble, could sit it out and pretend, surely her brother could join her in solidarity.
