September 10th 1996
Lily hated being inside, and even more than that, she hated being underground. Her claustrophobia really got to her after potions class where there wasn’t even a trace of natural light. She was glad not to be a Slytherin or Hufflepuff and have to live down there. So as soon as potions class ended, Lily bolted, grabbing her bag, throwing it over her shoulder and shoving her notebook in it as she ran out the door. It bothered her so much that she could normally feel her body grow tingly and her skin itched to get back into the sunlight. Normal periods didn’t bother her, but the double periods drove her mad. Not even her father as the professor or her love of the subject could stop it. She was fine at the start of every class, but as the hours ticked on she started shifting in her seat.
She bolted not only outside of the classroom, but outside of the castle in general. She wasn’t sure where she was going, but she wanted to feel the breeze and the sun while it was still out. She ended up at the base of the owlery and decided to go up. Lily wasn’t a huge fan on creatures, but owls were fine. Her family had one that she could give a little treat too anyway.

Harry too was not a fan of any confined space. He liked to be in the sky, on a broom, whenever possible. He also loved to magical creatures, so he was often at the hut with hagrid talking about whatever cool creatures he had around. After class, Harry headed straight for the owlery to send a letter to his parents. They asked him what his plans for the quidditch trials were, so he went into a little detail in a letter to send to them. He was sure his mother wouldn't bother with the details as much but his dad took Quidditch very seriously. Once up there, he tied his letter to Hedwigs leg. After giving her a treat she flew off. He followed her with his gaze until he remembered he had forgotten the gift he was going to send his mother. He cursed under his breath and, of course, Hedwig seemed to know. She flew back and he sighed with relief. "Be right back." He started to head down the stairs but caught site of Lily at the bottom. "Woah, you lost?" he joked. Lily E. Snape

As she got to the base of the tower leading up to the owlery, she ran into a familiar face and the sight drew a smirk to her lips. He was asking if she was lost as he was coming down the owlery. Was he already here? Weren’t they just in class? Maybe she had taken longer walking around the grounds before she decided on the owlery than she originally thought. Maybe he had left the classroom before she did. “What? I can’t go see the owls?” she asked, teasing herself. Though she figured it was a fair enough jest, she didn’t really like creatures and she didn’t even have an owl. However, her favorite place, the lake, was crowded with people on this warm, late fall day and she didn’t feel like being a part of a crowd right now. “What were you doing?” she asked.

She questioned his question about her being up there, and he shook his head, chuckling a little. "I thought the owls had it out for you?" He said. Then she asked what he was doing and he nodded back towards the owlery doorway. "I rushed over after class to send a letter to mom and dad. Guess I was in a bit of a hurry... Restless," he shrugged. "It really is nice day up here, come on you can see everyone out on the grounds," he beckoned her to follow him back in, and crossed over to one of the large carved out windows. Lily E. Snape

He laughed, saying that he thought owls had it out for her. Lily wrinkled her nose, but didn’t reply. It wasn’t exactly a false statement, but sometimes their company was more desirable than peoples. Sometimes. And sometimes, like today, her legs just carried her there without realizing where they were taking her. Harry explained that he had rushed out of class too because he was feeling restless. Lily nodded. Of course she understood that all too well, and she was pretty sure Harry knew that about her too. “Yeah, those double periods kill me.” she agreed. A trait that she inherited from her werewolf mother. While there was no wolf in Lily, she still had some of the qualities.
He said it was nice up there and asked her to follow him. She did, looking behind her first, wondering if there was anyone that would see the two of them together. She didn’t mind being seen with Harry, obviously, as they sat together in some of their classes, but she also knew how it looked, and how it would sound if it got back to her father. But she followed him up the stairs, into the owlery and over to a window overlooking the lawns and the lake in the distance. “Wow. This is a great view.” she agreed. It was a perspective she hadn’t had before.

Her nose wrinkled at his comment and he couldn't help but laugh. She said she hated those double periods and he nodded, maybe little vigorously. "I'm pretty sure Hermione wishes every day was like that," he suggested, shaking his head now at the oddity that was his dear friends obsession with school. He loved magic too, of course, but he definitely couldn't keep still like her. He brought her to the view, and she complimented it. He nodded, "there are upsides to the owlery," he suggested, nudging her arm with his shoulder. Lily E. Snape

Lily shrugged, “I could do double periods of any class that wasn’t underground… or taught by my dad…” she mumbled the last part of her sentence. She loved school and she loved being in classes. Despite her rougher personality, Lily was very academically minded. “Being in the dungeon for that long just drives me mad though.” she admitted. Her skin itched just thinking about it. It was like being buried alive. That was probably her worst fear, she thought, the psychological torture of being trapped or burried would haunt her more than any physical or magical torture there was. He nudged her and said there were upsides to the owlery and she snickered, brushing her hair back from her face and letting her fingers run through it. “Maybe I should let you bring me up here more often.” she teased. “Do you spend a lot of time up here with Hedwig?” she asked.

She said she could do double periods that weren't down there, and mumbling about her dad. The dungeons were indeed suffocating, but Harry didn't think he minded them as much as she did. He liked the outdoors more, of course, but she had a mild obsession. "Defense Against the Dark Arts. I could do that one twice," he suggested. "Maybe Transfiguration, if McGonagall was in a good mood... So once in a blue moon," he joked. She suggested that he bring her up there more, asking if he came up there a lot. "Not as much as I should, I guess. She sometimes comes to the dorms too," he explained. Lily E. Snape

Harry Potter insisted that he could do defense against the dark arts in a double period everyday and Lily laughed and nodded. She supposed she could too, even if the class was taught by her uncle. He didn’t tend to give her a hard time in lessons like her father did. She appreciated that. The fact that they were family didn’t mean anything in class. She was just another one of his students. “I could probably do that too. Or Herbology since we can be outside.” She added. Any chance to be outside was a chance that Lily took. “Sometimes I feel like I should get a pet.” Lily admitted but then she shrugged. “Though I worry I’d just get bored with it and give it to my mum to look after.” She smirked. Creatures and her just didn’t get along.

She suggested Herbology as well and he shrugged, "eh, maybe. Depends out difficult the plant is." Harry was fine with Herbology but it wasn't like it was his favorite subject. Sometimes it was downright boring while other times it was fascinating. She mentioned getting bored with a pet an he laughed, leaning forward on the window sill for a moment before remembering the owl poop and standing back up quickly. "Maybe just practice being friendly with Hedwig. Though, she's pretty picky..." he admitted. Then he turned to look at Lily, "if you're lucky she won't be jealous of you for spending time with me. She's a bit... Possessive."Lily E. Snape

Lily knew she was more academically minded than most people, but in reality, she was just more interested to different subjects than the majority of her peers were. She wasn’t sure if there was another student who shared her interest in herbology besides Neville Longbottom. Most people didn’t see a use, but Lily wanted to be a potioneer so she needed to know these things. Plus she found them interesting and practical. She wasn’t into magic or subjects that weren’t immediately practical. Harry suggested that Lily start off just trying to be friendly with Hedwig, and Lily nodded, “You think she’d let me touch her?” she asked. She didn’t really want her fingers bitten off by an angry owl. “Well, she might just have to get used to that. It’s been 6 years.” Lily said, nudging his shoulder playfully.

Lily asked if Hedwig would allow physical contact and Harry pursed his lips, shaking his head. "I think you'll have to ease into that. She's not really a fan jumping into new relationships," he explained. He turned to Hedwig who still had the letter attached to her leg and beckoned her forward. As she flew down, Lily nudged Harry's shoulder. "If she's not used to it enough by now then I'm worried about her ability to observe," Hedwig landed on his outstretched arm and sassily nipped at his ear. He tilted his head away from her and pointed an accusing finger, "you're gonna scare her off, Hed. Now, say hello," Hedwig turned to Lily, her best owl glare on her eyes. But she gave a short nod of greeting. Lily E. Snape

Harry called Hedwig down and the white owl swooped down and handed on his outstretched arm before nipping at his ear, which Harry dodged. Why someone would want a pet that constantly wanted to bite them, Lily didn’t understand. Not even a little bit. Harry asked Hedwig to say hello and the owl turned her head to her and Lily was pretty sure she was being glared at by an animal before Hedwig gave a little nod. Lily smiled to the creature, but bit her lip also before looking back over to Harry. “I think someone’s jealous…” Lily smirked. “You’re giving another woman attention.” she giggled.

Lily smiled a little, but bit her lip and commented that Hedwig was jealous for giving another woman attention. "Oh, I don't doubt that at all. You should have seen her when I ran into Cho up here in fourth year," he shook his head, that was embarrassing enough without Hedwig giving him the cold shoulder for a week afterwards. He flinched at the memory of asking Cho out and being turned down. Well, Cedric was a good guy so he supposed he understood. He wasn't into her anymore, thank goodness. "I was going to send something to mum but I forgot I had a gift for her so I was going to go get it," he took the letter off Hedwigs leg with one hand and pocketed it. "I'll just send it later," he suggested. He tried not to think about the fact that Lily and his mother had the same name. It was a bit strange if he mulled it over too hard. Lily E. Snape

Harry agreed that his owl was jealous and brought up how she acted when he had tried to ask Cho Chang out in their 4th year. Lily giggled. “Awe poor Hedwig.” It never really occurred to Lily that animals had feelings like humans did. She wasn’t an animal person and usually found them annoying and needy, but she supposed they did have to have feelings, and she knew they could communicate. She wondered why Hedwig would be jealous of a human girl. It wasn’t as if they could love Harry in the same way. But maybe that was a thought for another time. Harry went on, explaining that he was going to send his mum a gift also but he forgot it and would another time. Lily liked Harry’s mom, but she hated that she was named after it. It was kind of weird. And extremely awkward, especially given the nature of her relationship with Harry. “Aren’t you a good son.” Lily teased, ruffling his hair a little.
